How to care for Areca Palm

Dypsis lutescens (syn. Chrysalidocarpus lutescens)

Care level: ModerateNon-toxic to cats & dogs

The areca palm brings a breezy, tropical feel with its clusters of arching, golden-green stems and feathery fronds. It loves bright rooms and can grow into a lush floor plant that softens corners and fills empty spaces.

Also known as: Areca palm, butterfly palm, golden cane palm, yellow palm, bamboo palm, Dypsis lutescens, Chrysalidocarpus lutescens

Just arrived? Your first week at home

  1. Unbox it right away and let the fronds fan out naturally; they may have been gathered together for shipping.
  2. Check the soil; water thoroughly if the top inch is dry, and wait if it is still moist.
  3. Place it in bright, indirect light, such as near an east window or a few feet back from a south or west window.
  4. Some brown tips or a yellowed frond are common after shipping; trim them and watch for new growth.
  5. Keep it away from heat vents, radiators, and cold drafts from doors and windows.
  6. Wait at least two weeks before repotting.

Light

Bright, indirect light is best, such as near a sunny east window or a few feet back from a south or west window. A little gentle morning sun is fine, but strong afternoon sun can yellow and burn the fronds. In low light the palm stretches and slowly declines.

Water

Water when the top inch or two of soil is dry, often about once a week in spring and summer and less in winter. Water deeply until it drains, then empty the saucer. Brown, crispy tips and yellowing suggest underwatering or dry air; soft stems at the base and soggy soil mean overwatering.

Humidity

Areca palms like moderate to high humidity, ideally 40 to 60 percent. In dry heated homes, run a humidifier or use a large pebble tray to prevent brown tips. Regular rinsing also helps keep spider mites away.

Temperature

Keep it between 65 and 80 F and above 55 F. It is sensitive to cold, so keep it away from drafty doors and windows in winter, and away from heater vents.

Soil & repotting

Use a well-draining potting mix with added perlite or bark. Repot every two to three years in spring when roots crowd the pot, moving up one size, and keep the stems at the same depth. It is sensitive to salts, so flushing the soil with plain water a few times a year helps.

Feeding

Feed monthly from spring through summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength, or a palm fertilizer that includes magnesium and micronutrients. Do not feed in winter. Yellowing between veins on older fronds can mean it needs a nutrient boost.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • Brown frond tipsdry air, inconsistent watering, or fluoride and salts in tap water; raise humidity and use filtered water.
  • Yellowing frondstoo much direct sun, underwatering, or a nutrient deficiency; adjust light and feed in season.
  • Spider mites (fine webbing, speckling)rinse fronds in the shower and boost humidity.
  • Drooping, soft stems at the baseroot rot from overwatering; let the soil dry more and check drainage.
  • Slow, stretched growthtoo little light; move to a brighter spot.

Tips to help it thrive

  • Rinse it in the shower every month or two to clean dust and discourage spider mites.
  • Remove fully brown fronds at the base, but leave partly yellow ones until they are fully spent, since the plant reabsorbs nutrients.
  • It can summer outdoors in bright shade and come back in before nights fall below 55 F.

Pet safety

Areca Palm is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the leaves, which can cause a mild upset stomach.
