3 things calatheas care about
1. Better water
Filtered, distilled or rain water prevents the crispy brown edges tap water can cause.
2. Humidity
50% or more keeps leaves smooth. Group plants together or run a small humidifier.
3. No direct sun
Medium, indirect light keeps the patterns bold. Direct sun fades and curls leaves.

Calathea and prayer plant questions
Which calathea is easiest to care for?
Rattlesnake calathea and Calathea Freddie are the most forgiving calatheas. If you want the look with even less fuss, a prayer plant (Maranta) grows faster and bounces back more easily.
What is the difference between a calathea and a prayer plant?
They are close cousins in the same plant family. True prayer plants are Maranta, which grow low and spreading and fold their leaves up at night. Calatheas grow more upright with larger, bolder patterned leaves. Both are listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA.
Why are my calathea's leaf edges turning brown and crispy?
Usually dry air or minerals in tap water. Calatheas like 50% humidity or more and are sensitive to fluoride and salts. Switch to filtered, distilled or rain water, and group plants together or run a humidifier.
How much light do calatheas need?
Medium, indirect light is ideal. They handle lower light well, but direct sun fades the patterns and curls the leaves. A spot a few feet back from a bright window is perfect.
Are calatheas safe for cats and dogs?
Yes. The ASPCA lists Calathea and prayer plants as non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses. See the full safety guide.
