Just arrived? Your first week at home
- Unbox right away; it may look a little droopy after the trip.
- Check the soil, and if it is dry, water it thoroughly; it should perk up within a few hours.
- Place it in bright, indirect light, such as near an east window.
- Leave it in its nursery pot for at least two weeks.
- A few yellow or dropped lower leaves are normal shipping stress.
- Keep it away from heat vents and cold drafts.

Light
Bright, indirect light keeps the spots vivid, such as an east window or a few feet back from a south or west window. Too little light fades the color and makes the stems stretch. Hot afternoon sun can scorch the leaves.
Water
Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, watering when the top inch starts to dry, often once or twice a week in warm months. It droops noticeably when thirsty and bounces back after watering. Yellow leaves and soft stems mean it is staying too wet.
Humidity
It likes moderate to high humidity, around 50 percent. Dry air can cause crispy leaf edges, so a humidifier or pebble tray helps in winter.
Temperature
Keep it between 65 and 80 F. It is sensitive to cold, so keep it away from drafty windows below 60 F.
Soil & repotting
Use a good-quality, well-draining potting mix. It grows fast, so repot each spring into a pot one size larger. Always use a pot with a drainage hole.
Feeding
Feed every 2-4 weeks in spring and summer with a half-strength balanced liquid fertilizer. Too much nitrogen can dull the spots, so do not overdo it.
Troubleshooting common problems
- Leggy, floppy stemsnot enough light or no pinching; pinch tips regularly and move it brighter.
- Faded spotslow light; move it closer to a window.
- Droopingthirsty; water thoroughly.
- Crispy leaf edgesdry air or missed waterings; raise humidity and water more consistently.
- Plant declines after floweringit is putting energy into seeds; pinch off flower spikes as soon as they appear.
Tips to help it thrive
- Pinch the top pair of leaves off each stem every few weeks to keep it bushy.
- Stem cuttings root quickly in water, so you can easily refresh an older, leggy plant.
- Plant several colors together in one pot for a bright, mixed display.
Pet safety
Polka Dot Plant is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs by the ASPCA. As with any houseplant, it's still best to discourage pets from chewing the leaves, which can cause a mild upset stomach.
