Rabbit's foot fern has lacy, feathery fronds and fuzzy, furry rhizomes that creep over the edge of the pot like little paws. It's a fun, easygoing fern for a shelf or hanging pot, and it's safe around cats and dogs.

Botanical name Davallia fejeensis
Pet safety Non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA listed)
Light Medium to bright, indirect
Mature size About 1 to 2 feet wide
Care level Easy to moderate

How to care for it

  • Light: medium to bright, indirect light. Direct sun scorches the fronds.
  • Water: water when the top inch of soil is dry. Mist the fuzzy rhizomes now and then, but don't bury them.
  • Humidity: average to high. It's more forgiving of dry air than many ferns.
  • Temperature: 60 to 80°F, away from heat vents and drafts.

Common questions

Is it safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA lists rabbit's foot fern (listed as ball fern) as non-toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that eats a lot of any plant may get a mild upset stomach, but it won't be poisoned.

Should I cover the fuzzy rhizomes with soil?

No. They're meant to grow above the soil and over the pot's edge. Burying them can cause rot.

Ships in its nursery pot. Decorative pots in the photos are not included.
