The white nerve plant has deep green leaves covered in a crisp net of white veins. It stays small and bushy, which makes it perfect for desks, shelves and terrariums, and it's safe around cats and dogs.

Botanical name Fittonia albivenis
Also called Mosaic plant, nerve plant
Pet safety Non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA listed)
Light Medium, indirect
Mature size About 3 to 6 inches tall, spreading
Care level Easy to moderate

How to care for it

  • Light: medium, indirect light. Direct sun scorches the leaves.
  • Water: keep the soil evenly moist. It droops dramatically when thirsty and perks right back up after watering.
  • Humidity: higher humidity keeps the leaves from crisping. It loves terrariums.
  • Temperature: 60 to 80°F, away from cold drafts.

Common questions

Is it safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA lists the nerve plant (Fittonia) as non-toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that eats a lot of any plant may get a mild upset stomach, but it won't be poisoned.

Why did it suddenly collapse?

It's thirsty. Fittonia faints when the soil dries out. Water it well and it should stand back up within a few hours.

Ships in its nursery pot. Decorative pots in the photos are not included.
