The red prayer plant has velvety, dark green leaves with bright red veins in a herringbone pattern and a lighter green stripe down the center. The leaves fold up each evening and open in the morning. It's a classic, easy houseplant and safe around cats and dogs.

Botanical name Maranta leuconeura 'Erythroneura'
Also called Herringbone plant, red-veined prayer plant
Pet safety Non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA listed)
Light Medium to bright, indirect
Mature size About 12 inches tall, spreading or trailing
Care level Easy to moderate

How to care for it

  • Light: medium to bright, indirect light. Direct sun fades the red veins.
  • Water: water when the top inch of soil is dry. Keep it lightly moist, never soggy.
  • Water quality: filtered or distilled water helps prevent brown leaf tips.
  • Humidity: average to high. It likes a humid spot but is less fussy than a calathea.
  • Growth: it spreads and trails with age. Trim long stems to keep it full, or let it spill from a hanging pot.

Common questions

Is it safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. The ASPCA lists the prayer plant (Maranta leuconeura) as non-toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that eats a lot of any plant may get a mild upset stomach, but it won't be poisoned.

Why do the leaves fold up at night?

That's how prayer plants got their name. The leaves lift in the evening and lower in the morning. It's normal and a sign of a healthy plant.

Why is it getting leggy?

It usually wants more light. Move it closer to a bright window, out of direct sun, and trim long stems to encourage bushier growth.

Ships in its nursery pot. Decorative pots in the photos are not included.

I'm new to houseplants and decided to venture out and buy some online. I will definitely buy more plants from Root & Reach Botanicals. They were shipped with care and arrived in perfect condition.
