Silver ribbon fern has narrow, ribbon-like fronds with a creamy silver stripe down the center of each leaflet. The bright stripes lighten up a shady corner, and it's safe around cats and dogs.

Botanical name Pteris cretica 'Albolineata'
Pet safety Non-toxic to cats and dogs
Light Medium to low, indirect
Mature size About 1 to 1.5 feet tall
Care level Easy to moderate

How to care for it

  • Light: medium to low, indirect light. Direct sun scorches the fronds.
  • Water: keep the soil evenly moist, never soggy. Don't let it dry out completely.
  • Humidity: higher humidity keeps the fronds lush. Bathrooms and kitchens are ideal.
  • Temperature: 60 to 80°F, away from heat vents and drafts.

Common questions

Is it safe for cats and dogs?

Yes. Silver ribbon fern is non-toxic to cats and dogs. A pet that eats a lot of any plant may get a mild upset stomach, but it won't be poisoned.

Why are the fronds turning brown and crispy?

Usually the soil dried out or the air is too dry. Keep the soil evenly moist and raise the humidity. Trim off damaged fronds and new ones will grow in.

Ships in its nursery pot. Decorative pots in the photos are not included.
